WWDC22 broke the news: about the name and new features of macOS 13

macOS 13 will be released at the WWDC Worldwide Developers Conference on June 7th, Beijing time. As the operating system for Apple's next version of the Mac computer, we have sorted out some of the latest news about macOS 13 on the Internet before the start of the conference.

name

In recent years, Apple has mainly named macOS after famous attractions across the United States, including Big Sur, Monterey, Catalina, etc. Apple has previously submitted more than 20 similar trademark applications in one go, and according to the latest exposure news, Apple expects Name macOS 13 macOS 13 Mammoth.

Mammoth is a popular area for skiing and hiking in the Sierra Nevada, and a trademark application for the name was approved in March 2019; since then, applications for extension of the name have been approved several times, most recently in 2021 November. This seems to suggest that Apple may announce macOS 13 Mammoth at WWDC next week.

compatibility

As Apple transitions its processors from the Intel platform to its own Apple Silicon platform, macOS 13 compatibility will be consistent with the Mac series supported by macOS Monterey.

iMac - Late 2015 and newer models

iMac Pro - 2017 and newer models

MacBook Air - Early 2015 and newer

MacBook Pro - Early 2015 and newer

· Mac Pro - Late 2013 and newer models

· Mac mini - Late 2014 and newer

MacBook - Early 2016 and newer

Among them, Intel-based Macs will not support some of the features in macOS Monterey: portrait mode in FaceTime, interactive map globes, more detailed city maps, object capture, Siri text-to-speech, on-device keyboard dictation, and more.

Rumored New Features

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, macOS 13 will come with an overhauled System Preferences that more closely matches the Settings app on iPhones and iPads.

Gurman also believes that other default applications will also be redesigned, including Mail, Notes, Reminders, Podcasts, Safari, Messages and Music.

other possible functions

Gurman said that the Messages app in macOS 13 will get more social network-like features like the Messages app in iOS 16, especially when it comes to audio messages.

There are rumors that Apple plans to make adjustments to the lock screen on iOS, including wallpapers that function like widgets; while macOS won't necessarily copy the scheme on iOS, some users want widgets on macOS to be more flexible, such as Ability to move them around on the desktop or keep them permanently in view.

Apple is also working on an optional dedicated Apple Music iOS app for classical music. Whether this will be a separate app in macOS is unclear.
